Eliminate occupational health and safety hazards and improve worker safety with the global standard.
The ISO 45001:2018 solely focuses on the occupational health and safety management system of an organisation. This standard works towards eliminating the chance of any potential disease and injuries related to occupation. It also follows the structure of ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 9001:2015, so that it is easy to integrate these standards in any organisation if it has already received the ISO 45001:2018 certification.
The organisations that have already acquired the BS OHSAS 18001 certification can easily migrate to the ISO 45001. Although the ISO 45001:2018 is mainly based on the standards of OHSAS 18001, there are some differences in these two standards. The now-defunct OHSAS 18001 was mainly focused on managing the occupational health and safety hazards and issues related to it. However, the ISO 45001 primarily focuses on the interaction between the working environment and the organization. This helps to minimize or eliminate the chance of any hazard. The new ISO 45001:2018 standard is a process-based certification while the old OHSAS 18001 is a procedure-based certification. The first one focuses primarily on why the hazard happens rather than solely concentrating on the solution part. The OHSAS 18001 is not dynamic, but the new ISO 45001 truly is.
Besides addressing all the OH&S issues of any organisation, it also gives it the much-required confidence in safety management for efficient productivity and improved working condition for all the workers. The OHSAS 18001 certification primarily focuses on the occupational risk of any organization while the ISO 45001 focuses on both the risk and opportunities. By doing so, it not only eliminates the chance of future hazards and finds opportunities to improve the overall safety standard. OHSAS 18001 did not ever include the views of interested parties of any organization. However, the new ISO 45001:2018 contains all the aspects. With that inclusion, it not only creates the engagement of all the parties but also creates a better working environment.

All the required activities for the systematic implementation of legislation and requirements on occupational health & safety are now initiated and regulated top-down. The management tier of a company therefore expects occupational health & safety to assume a central role and be more heavily integrated into the processes.
The current OHSAS 18001 certification is suitable for any company in any industry. This will not change with the new International ISO 45001 standard. If you wish to permanently, reduce the occupational health & safety-related risks for your employees, visitors as well as suppliers and service providers, have your health & safety management certified.
The aim of an occupational health & safety management system which is ISO 45001-certified is to reduce the risk of injuries and illness in the workplace and where possible to avoid them entirely. You will therefore benefit from the opportunity to bring your strategic direction in line with your occupational health & safety management system. Furthermore, ISO 45001 emphasizes the responsibility of top management and thus extends beyond the scope of employee training.
The finalized standard was published on 12th March 2018. After the first draft of ISO 45001 (Draft International Standard – DIS) was rejected in May 2016, a second version was drafted and subsequently accepted in July 2017. In September 2017, the international committee on standards reviewed the results of their vote before releasing a Final Draft at the end of November 2017.
With the publication on 18 January 2018 of IAF MD (IAF Mandatory Document) 21:2018, titled Requirements for the Migration to ISO 45001:2018 from OHSAS 18001:2007, the new ISO 45001 standard is now confirmed to be replacing the older OHSAS 18001 norm. Companies are granted a three-year transition period starting from the standard's publication date until March 2021.
ISO 45001 certification is an international recognition of a health & safety management system for every company in every industry. The SCC (Safety Certificate Contractors), on the other hand, is only valid for subcontractors in industry, the SCP certificate (Safety Certificate Personnel Leasing) is only valid for HR service providers and the SCCP Certificate (Safety Certificate Contractors for Petrochemicals) is only valid for service providers within the petrochemicals industry. Alongside these specializations, ISO 45001 is a universal solution for certified occupational and health& safety management at an international level.
Increasing competitive pressure and ever-faster response times mean that there is no longer any room for error for companies today. Industrial accidents and downtime usually lead to disruption to the production and supply process and can in the worst case scenario result in order cancellations. An occupational health & safety system will allow you to demonstrably reduce the number of accidents through a systematic approach to aspects of health & safety.
ISO 45001:2018 is the international standard for managing occupational health and safety (OH&S). It is a process-based standard focused on preventing work-related injury and ill health and providing safe and healthy workplaces. Unlike its predecessor, OHSAS 18001, which was procedure-based, ISO 45001 places a massive emphasis on worker participation and integrating the OHSMS into the organization’s overall business processes, ensuring it is a strategic, rather than isolated, function.
The standard utilizes the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle to achieve continual improvement. Its core focus is the elimination of hazards and minimization of OH&S risks, giving special consideration to the context in which the organization operates.
[Image of PDCA cycle diagram]Clause 4 requires the organization to consider the needs and expectations of all interested parties, including statutory bodies, contractors, and especially the workers themselves. The organization must identify risks that are relevant to its specific activities—a chemical factory faces different risks than an office building.
Top management must lead by example, providing the necessary resources and actively promoting a culture where safety is paramount. Crucially, the standard mandates the establishment of mechanisms for consultation and participation of workers at all levels in the development, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the OHSMS. This is particularly vital in unionized environments common in Kerala.
This is the operational core. The organization must systematically identify hazards, assess the risks, and implement controls using a hierarchy: Elimination, Substitution, Engineering Controls, Administrative Controls, and finally, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). For a construction site in Kochi, this includes managing fall hazards, ensuring proper scaffolding, and providing training in Malayalam.
This includes managing changes (Management of Change), ensuring preparedness for emergencies (e.g., fire drills, medical response), and most significantly, ensuring that contractors and outsourced operations adhere to the same stringent safety standards. A factory owner must ensure the temporary maintenance crew is as safe as the full-time staff.
This involves internal audits, monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs) related to safety (e.g., Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate - LTIFR), and reviewing the system's effectiveness.
Kerala's economy has high exposure to construction, ports/logistics, and traditional manufacturing (coir, cashew). These sectors carry inherent OH&S risks:
Adopting ISO 45001 compels construction firms to move beyond minimum regulatory compliance (like BOCW Act) towards global best practices, significantly reducing site accidents, which are often fatal.
A certified OHSMS reduces the likelihood of accidents, which translates directly to lower insurance premiums, fewer regulatory fines, minimized business disruption, and reduced legal liabilities arising from worker compensation claims.
In densely populated urban and coastal areas, demonstrating a commitment to health and safety (of workers, visitors, and neighboring communities) provides a strong social license to operate, improving community relations and brand image.
ISO 45001, therefore, transitions safety from being a necessary cost to a demonstrable commitment to human capital and a strategic management tool.
