A trademark registration in India is valid for 10 years. To maintain ownership rights, you must renew it within six months before expiry, or within one year after expiry (with a surcharge). Renewal can be done indefinitely to keep the trademark active and perpetual.
You should file the renewal within six months before the ten-year expiry. However, you can still renew within one year after expiry by paying the prescribed late fee.
If it expires, you can apply for restoration within six months post-expiration. Note: this involves additional fees and carries risk.
Renewal can be filed online or offline, usually through a registered trademark attorney. The process includes paying the renewal and any late fees. Before expiry, the Registry will send a notice. If missed, the mark is removed but can be renewed within the one-year extension.

You can file for Restoration of the mark. This is slightly more expensive than a standard renewal and requires a statement explaining the delay. However, it completely revives your original registration date.
Warning: Once 1 year has passed since expiration, the mark is legally "Dead." It is removed from the register, and the name becomes available for any competitor to snap up.
If you plan to take a business loan or sell your company, the auditor will value your brand. A trademark with a "Registered since 2000" status is an asset. A lapsed trademark is a liability.
In court, a trademark that has been renewed multiple times acquires a status of "incontestability" on certain grounds. It proves you are serious about defending your rights.
