Employee’s State Insurance (ESI) is a scheme designed to provide the socio-economic protection to employees working in a company. ESI scheme runs under an independent authority, Employee State Insurance Corporation which falls under the jurisdiction and management of Ministry of Labour and Employment. This insurance scheme covers an employee and his family in cases such as medical treatments, maternity related treatments, and various other medical related benefits. The ESI scheme extends to the financial assistance and medical care to the employees along with family members insured under ESI Act. ESIC is a self-financing scheme as the employer and the employee need to make contribution to insure an employee and his family under the scheme. The employer needs to register online for ESI Scheme once the employer falls under the obligations of taking this registration.
The employee and his/her family insured under ESIC can avail medical assistance and treatment when required through the Model Hospitals run by ESIC (Except in Delhi) without linking to employee’s wages and contributions.
Maternity benefit is designed for Pregnant women who is covered under ESI, the benefits are payable up to 26 weeks. The period of benefit can be extended to more 30 days on medical instruction. To avail the benefit of this scheme, employees are required to contribute their wages/salaries for 70 days in the preceding 2 contribution periods.
In case an employee cannot attend his/her job due to illness reasons (maximum up to 91 days per year), will get an aid of 70% of his monthly salary from ESI.
In case of sudden death of an employee during the employment tenure, the dependents of the deceased employee will receive 90% of his/her monthly salary.
In case of death of an employee during his employment tenure, the family of the deceased will receive an additional amount of Rs. 10000 towards funeral expenses.
In case of confinement of an insured women or wife of an employee with ESI, occurring in a place with no medical facilities under the ESI scheme can avail confinement expense from ESIC.
